Third straight freshman award for Wildcats

LOUISVILLE, KY – UK men’s basketball player John Wall was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.

Wall, a 6-4 guard from Raleigh, N.C., averaged 19.0 points, 5.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in leading the Wildcats to the Cancun Challenge championship. He was named the tournament MVP after he scored a career-high 23 points in leading Kentucky to a 73-65 overtime victory against Stanford in the finals of the Cancun Challenge. He hit a jumper with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score and then knocked down two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The honor was the second straight SEC Freshman of the Week honor for Wall. The Wildcats have won all three weekly freshman honors from the conference office this season, beginning with Eric Bledsoe in the first week and Wall the last two weeks. Junior Patrick Patterson was also named the league’s Player of the Week last week giving the Wildcats four SEC Player/Freshman of the week awards this season.

Wall was also named the ESPN.com National Player of the Week last week.
